However, I think that those are the very reasons that it’s an excellent example of not just the Great American Novel but has a claim for being a Great Native American Novel. Perhaps it’s because it illustrates how deeply America was influenced by Native Culture. Perhaps it’s because Neil isn’t an American citizen. Perhaps it’s because it openly claims to be a fantasy. One, however, that doesn’t get discussed enough is Neil Gaiman’s seminal 2001 work: American Gods. They say You can’t judge a book by its cover, but this one IS iconic.
